State Prepared for Snowfall and Rain, Impacting Apple Crops and Wheat Sowing

Shimla, December 31: Himachal Pradesh is preparing for another spell of rainfall and snowfall, with the Meteorological Department issuing an alert starting January 2. Snowfall is expected to begin in the higher altitudes on this date, followed by widespread rain and snow across the state by January 3. Authorities have been advised to stay on high alert as the weather system approaches.

The impending snowfall is particularly crucial for the apple-growing regions of the state, including Shimla, Kullu, Bharmour, and Pangi. These areas depend on adequate snowfall to achieve the “zero chilling hours” necessary for the proper development of apple crops. Despite some snowfall earlier in the season, growers are concerned that it hasn’t been sufficient, and a larger accumulation of snow is needed to ensure a healthy apple harvest.

On the other hand, recent rainfall has benefited wheat cultivation in the plains, with areas such as Una, Kangra, Hamirpur, and Bilaspur receiving sufficient moisture for sowing. This rainfall has provided much-needed support to the farmers in these regions.

However, high-altitude areas continue to experience severe cold, with Tabo recording a chilling -15.5°C. Other areas like Kukumseri and Samdho are also grappling with temperatures as low as -11°C and -12°C, creating challenges for daily life in these regions.

As the state anticipates the upcoming weather system, the importance of the snowfall cannot be overstated. It will play a critical role in supporting both the apple orchards and wheat farmers in the region. The coming days will be crucial in ensuring that there is enough snow and rain to meet the agricultural and horticultural needs of the state.
