Efforts to Enhance Quality Education and Promote Sports Among Students

Shimla: The Himachal Pradesh government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, is implementing a range of initiatives aimed at improving the quality of education across the state. One of the key measures is the establishment of Rajiv Gandhi Day Boarding Schools, which are being developed in a phased manner. These schools, designed to accommodate up to 1,000 students from pre-primary to class 12, will offer modern amenities and state-of-the-art facilities. Construction is already underway for six such schools in the Kangra district, including areas like Nagrota Bagwan, Jwalamukhi, Fatehpur, Palampur, Jai Singhpur, and Bhoranj in Hamirpur district.

Sukhu expressed, “The Rajiv Gandhi Day Boarding Schools will be equipped with high-tech smart classrooms, sports grounds, indoor stadiums, and even swimming pools. These schools are expected to elevate the standard of government educational institutions and inspire rural students to face challenges with confidence.”

In addition to the new schools, the government has identified 100 government high schools, 200 senior secondary schools, 48 government colleges, and two Sanskrit colleges as ‘Centers of Excellence.’ These institutions will focus on providing enhanced educational quality. The government is also emphasizing the role of sports in student life, especially to help deter youth from engaging in drug use.

As part of this effort, the government has increased the diet money for students involved in sports competitions. For zonal and district-level competitions, diet money has been raised from Rs. 120 to Rs. 400, and for national-level competitions, it has been boosted from Rs. 250 to Rs. 500. Players training in the state’s eight sports hostels will also see an increase in their diet money, from Rs. 240 to Rs. 400. Sukhu noted, “Our focus on providing modern facilities in education and sports will create a more conducive environment for student development, helping them thrive academically and personally.”
