Regulation Aims to Protect Forests and Ensure Sustainable Practices

Shimla: In a move to tackle illegal deforestation, the Himachal Pradesh Forest Department has announced a new licensing system for chain woodcutters. The system, akin to gun licenses, is designed to regulate the use of these powerful machines, which have contributed to widespread unauthorized tree felling in the state’s forests.

The licensing requirement will be based on the horsepower of the chain woodcutters, with smaller machines potentially exempt from the rule. This decision comes in response to the increasing damage to forest resources caused by the rapid tree-felling capabilities of high-powered chain woodcutters, which can bring down large trees in mere minutes.

The Forest Department is currently in the process of creating detailed regulations to enforce this new policy. Penalties, including fines and the potential confiscation of machines, will be imposed on those found operating chain woodcutters without the proper license.

To gauge the number of machines currently in use, the department has initiated a campaign in collaboration with local Panchayats. These Panchayats are being asked to inform individuals using chain woodcutters to register with the relevant Divisional Forest Officer (DFO).
