Manali’s Snowy Roads Claim Another Victim as Winter Weather Disrupts Life in Himachal Pradesh

A terrifying incident unfolded in Manali, Himachal Pradesh, when a truck lost control on a snow-covered road and plummeted into the depths of Solang Valley. The heart-stopping moment, captured on video, shows the truck skidding uncontrollably on a treacherous icy slope, as heavy snowfall worsened the road conditions.

In a split-second decision, the truck driver managed to leap from the moving vehicle, narrowly avoiding a plunge into the valley himself. Despite his desperate attempts to stop the truck, the icy road made it impossible to regain control, and within moments, the truck disappeared into the snowy abyss.

This harrowing incident follows a similar mishap earlier this month near the Atal Tunnel, which links Manali to the Lahaul-Spiti Valley. In that case, a Mahindra Thar also skidded off a snow-laden road, but the driver miraculously escaped by jumping out before the vehicle could fall.

The recent heavy snowfall has made travel extremely hazardous across the region. Over 1,000 vehicles became stranded between Solang and the Atal Tunnel, leaving around 5,000 tourists trapped in the chaos. The Kullu police conducted large-scale rescue operations, working tirelessly to assist those caught in the difficult conditions.

One stranded tourist, Rajib Dutta, expressed frustration, stating, “Roads are blocked, stalls shut, no water. It’s suffocating.” Authorities confirmed that rescue operations were ongoing, with police successfully rescuing tourists and relocating them to safe areas.

The snowfall has led to the closure of over 200 roads, including three national highways. Shimla, Lahaul-Spiti, and Kullu have been the hardest-hit, with many roads blocked and essential services disrupted. Additionally, more than 170 transformers were affected, leaving large portions of the region without power.

As rescue efforts continue and road-clearing operations are underway, local authorities are urging travelers to be cautious and avoid unnecessary travel. While the snow has turned Himachal Pradesh into a winter wonderland, it also serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by unpredictable mountain weather.
