HP Government’s Efforts to Strengthen Dairy Sector Lead to Surge in Milk Purchases and Direct Benefits for Farmers
Shimla, December 26: The Himachal Pradesh government’s initiatives to bolster the rural economy are yielding positive outcomes, especially in the dairy sector. Following a historic increase in milk procurement prices, the government’s purchase of milk has seen a steady rise. As a result, Milkfed is now purchasing two lakh liters of milk daily, which has significantly increased the monthly payment to milk producers from Rs 8.70 crore to Rs 25.62 crore, offering direct financial benefits to farmers.
Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu emphasized that the state government is committed to strengthening the milk-based economy. The government has increased the price for cow milk to Rs 45 per liter and buffalo milk to Rs 55 per liter. With 90% of Himachal’s population living in rural areas, the government aims to ensure that the financial benefits directly reach the people of the villages, empowering them economically.
The Chief Minister further highlighted the state’s efforts to enhance transparency in the milk procurement process. To this end, 455 automatic milk collection centers have been established through Milkfed across the state. These centers help collect milk directly from farmers’ doorsteps, particularly in remote areas, improving both their social and economic conditions. Additionally, Milkfed provides farmers with 5-liter capacity cans to facilitate the collection process.
To further boost farmers’ incomes, the state government, through Milkfed, is running dairy development programs in 11 districts. These programs have led to the formation of 1,148 rural dairy cooperative societies, with 47,905 members enrolled. The government’s goal is to provide sustainable livelihoods to rural communities while strengthening the state’s dairy economy.

In line with these efforts, the state government has launched the Him Ganga Yojana with an allocation of Rs 500 crore for the current financial year. It has also established a new milk processing plant at Duttnagar in Shimla district with a daily capacity of 50,000 liters at a cost of Rs 25 crore. Furthermore, a new processing plant with a capacity of 1.5 lakh liters per day is under construction at Dhagwar in Kangra district. These initiatives are expected to significantly enhance the dairy sector, ensuring better prices for milk producers.
With a focus on strengthening the rural economy, the government is taking several proactive steps, including raising the minimum support price for milk and promoting natural farming. These measures aim to improve the financial stability of farmers and foster sustainable agricultural practices across the state.
