Shimla, December 26: A major bribery scandal has come to light with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) exposing a corruption racket involving a senior Enforcement Directorate (ED) officer and his brother, who acted as his associate. The investigation follows a complaint filed with the CBI office in Chandigarh, alleging bribes totaling ₹2.5 crore.

According to sources, the senior ED officer, who was stationed in Shimla, reportedly demanded bribes from two individuals under investigation for money laundering. He allegedly used threats of arrest to extort ₹1.5 crore from one individual and ₹1 crore from another. His brother is said to have played a pivotal role in facilitating these financial transactions.

The CBI began its probe after receiving the formal complaint but encountered initial resistance when the accused officer went into hiding and switched off his phone. Meanwhile, the officer’s associate was caught in Chandigarh attempting to flee with ₹54 lakh in cash. A subsequent raid at the associate’s residence uncovered an additional ₹60 lakh, while further searches at the Shimla ED office revealed crucial documents linking the bribery scheme.

The associate, who holds a senior role at a prominent institution, was brought before a duty magistrate. The CBI requested a five-day remand for further investigation, but only two days were granted, as authorities continue efforts to locate the absconding officer.

The investigation was triggered by complaints from the victims, who claimed they were coerced into paying substantial bribes. Despite the officer’s temporary evasion, the CBI remains optimistic about making substantial progress in the case. This high-profile scandal has raised serious concerns about corruption within enforcement agencies and underscores the importance of implementing stricter oversight to curb such illegal activities.
