Christmas Day Brings Snow and Chaos in North India
On Christmas Day, December 25, heavy snowfall has blanketed Himachal Pradesh, including popular tourist destinations like Shimla and Manali, giving the region a picturesque White Christmas. As temperatures plummeted below zero, the snowfall has not only enhanced the festive atmosphere but also caused significant disruptions. The intense snowstorm has led to the closure of more than 200 roads, stranding many tourists in various areas, and worsening conditions across the state.
Tragic Incident Amidst the Snowfall
The snowfall, while beautiful, has led to tragic consequences as four people lost their lives due to vehicle slips. Tourists who had flocked to Himachal Pradesh to witness the snowfall are now facing unexpected dangers. The Meteorological Department had issued early warnings about the snow, advising against travel during these hazardous conditions. Despite the warnings, the slippery roads caused accidents, highlighting the risks of winter travel in the region.
Dense Fog and Cold Wave Impacting North India
Meanwhile, in Delhi, dense fog has enveloped the capital city, reducing visibility to just 100 meters at 5:30 a.m. on Christmas morning. This thick fog, coupled with temperatures around 9°C, has caused significant travel disruptions, including delays for more than 20 trains. The poor air quality has made it uncomfortable for residents to go outdoors, with many experiencing difficulty in breathing.
Additionally, the Meteorological Department has issued a cold wave alert for Himachal Pradesh and other parts of North India. The cold wave, expected to persist on December 25 and 26, is set to impact daily life, increasing the likelihood of seasonal illnesses. The Department has urged the public to take extra precautions, particularly for vulnerable groups like children and the elderly, to avoid health complications due to the biting cold.
The current weather conditions in North India are not only making the festive season more challenging but are also posing serious risks to public safety.
