Over 1,000 Vehicles Stranded as Manali Police Launch Rescue Operations
Manali, 25 December: A heavy snowfall on Monday evening in the Atal Tunnel and Dhundhi region has caused significant disruptions, leaving more than 1,000 vehicles stranded. As snow covered the roads and vehicles struggled with slipping, the Manali Police initiated a large-scale rescue operation to ensure the safety of tourists caught in the adverse weather. Evacuations are being carried out in phases, guiding stranded tourists back towards Manali.
The snowfall began in the afternoon and intensified by evening, leading to dangerous road conditions. Anticipating such an event, the police had already restricted vehicle movement beyond Solanganala. However, tourists traveling back from Lahaul were caught off guard when their vehicles started skidding on the snow near the South Portal of the Atal Tunnel and Dhundhi.
DSP Manali KD Sharma confirmed that rescue efforts were in full swing despite the ongoing snowfall. “Our team is working tirelessly to evacuate stranded tourists safely. Hundreds of vehicles have been guided towards Solanganala from the Dhundhi bridge, but many are still stuck between the South Portal and Dhundhi,” he said.

In addition to the rescue operations, IPS Mayank Chaudhary assured the tourists that help was available. “We are committed to making your experience in Lahaul Spiti safe and pleasant. If you need any help, please don’t hesitate to reach out—we are here to assist you,” he stated.
The combination of slippery roads and concerns about vehicle collisions has posed significant challenges for the rescue teams. Despite the ongoing snowfall, the operation is being conducted carefully to prioritize safety for both the tourists and the responders.
Authorities have issued a strong advisory for tourists and locals to avoid traveling to high-altitude areas during adverse weather conditions. The Manali Police have deployed additional personnel to manage the situation effectively and ensure the safety of all involved.
This incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of mountain weather and the importance of following advisories to stay safe. Tourists are urged to remain patient and cooperate with the authorities as the rescue efforts continue.
