Manali, December 23: A severe snowstorm in the Atal Tunnel and Dhundhi regions of Manali on Monday evening left over 1,000 vehicles stranded, creating significant disruption for tourists. The heavy snowfall led to slippery road conditions, causing vehicles to slip, especially near the South Portal of the Atal Tunnel and the Dhundhi area, resulting in a large-scale rescue operation by Manali Police.
Snowfall began in the afternoon and intensified as the evening progressed. Anticipating the impact of the snow, police had already halted vehicle movement beyond Solanganala earlier in the day. However, the snow caught tourists returning from Lahaul off guard, and many vehicles were unable to proceed safely due to the treacherous conditions.
DSP Manali KD Sharma confirmed that rescue operations are continuing despite the persistent snowfall. “Our teams are working tirelessly to guide stranded vehicles and ensure the safe evacuation of tourists. So far, hundreds of vehicles have been moved towards Solanganala from the Dhundhi bridge, but many are still stuck between the South Portal and Dhundhi,” he said.
To reassure tourists, IPS Mayank Chaudhary assured the public of the authorities’ commitment to their safety. “We are dedicated to assisting all stranded visitors. If you need help or have any concerns, please reach out to us—our team is always ready to provide support,” Chaudhary said.

The dangerous driving conditions also raised concerns about potential accidents, complicating rescue operations. Teams are prioritizing safety, moving cautiously in an effort to avoid any further mishaps.
Authorities have advised tourists and locals to refrain from traveling to high-altitude areas during inclement weather to avoid further risks. The Manali Police remain on high alert, with additional personnel deployed to manage the crisis effectively and ensure the safety of all involved.
