Shimla, 24 December: Justice Gurmeet Singh Sandhawalia has been appointed as the 30th Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court. The Ministry of Law and Justice, Government of India, issued an official notification confirming his appointment. Prior to this, Justice Sandhawalia was serving at the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

Following the retirement of Chief Justice Rajiv Shakdher, Justice Tarlok Singh Chauhan had been acting as the interim Chief Justice for the past month.

Born on 1 November 1965, Justice Gurmeet Singh Sandhawalia completed his Bachelor of Arts (Honors) degree from DAV College in Chandigarh in 1986, and subsequently pursued his law degree at Punjab University, Chandigarh. He began his legal practice in 1989 at the Punjab and Haryana High Court. Justice Sandhawalia is the son of the late Justice Surjit Singh Sandhawalia, who served as the Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court from 1978 to 1983 and later became the Chief Justice of the Patna High Court.

Justice Sandhawalia’s judicial career took a significant step forward on 30 September 2011, when he was appointed as a judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. He became a permanent judge on 24 January 2014. Over the years, Justice Sandhawalia has held leadership roles in various committees, including the Departmental Promotion and Recruitment Committee, the Arbitration and Conciliation Committee, and several others overseeing judicial recruitment and promotion.
