Shimla: Himachal Pradesh has paved the way for the construction of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations and e-workshops across the state, with a significant boost from the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD). The project, valued at Rs 128 crore, has now received approval from the Finance Department, which has authorized the Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) to carry out the construction.
The project involves the establishment of 53 e-charging stations across various locations in the state, aimed at promoting the adoption of electric vehicles and advancing environmental sustainability. The Bus Stand Development Authority under the Transport Department is set to begin the construction of these e-charging stations and e-workshops, following the Finance Department’s approval.
NABARD Funding and State Contribution
The total cost of the project will be covered by a mix of loans and state funds. NABARD will provide 90% of the required funds as a loan, with the remaining 10% being financed by the state government. As part of the financing arrangement, NABARD has already released approximately Rs 35 crore, accounting for 30% of the project cost in the initial phase.
Initially, the Transport Department had been given approval for the project, but due to challenges, the department expressed its inability to undertake the work. This led to delays in advancing the construction process. With the new approval, HRTC is now tasked with ensuring the completion of the project.
Focus on Modern E-Workshops and E-Charging Stations
As part of this project, e-workshops will also be established, with modern facilities for repairing and maintaining electric buses. These workshops will play a crucial role in supporting the state’s growing fleet of electric vehicles. The workshops will be set up in two key locations in Shimla district—Dhali and Taradevi—ensuring that electric buses in the region have access to necessary maintenance and repair services.
This initiative aligns with the state government’s broader commitment to environmental protection and sustainability. Alongside e-charging stations, the promotion of e-taxis is also part of the effort to reduce carbon emissions and encourage the use of green transport options in Himachal Pradesh.
The construction of these infrastructure projects marks a significant step in the state’s efforts to modernize its transport system and contribute to the national goals of reducing pollution and fostering clean energy usage.
