Bilaspur: Cancer patients in Himachal Pradesh are set to benefit from a new and essential diagnostic service at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Bilaspur. The state’s largest health institute will soon offer the PET scan facility, with the equipment having already arrived at the institute. The facility is expected to be operational by the end of February 2025, providing much-needed relief to patients who previously had to travel to PGI Chandigarh for these tests.
The PET scan machine is currently being installed at AIIMS Bilaspur, and the hospital’s experts are undergoing training to operate it effectively. Once functional, the service will significantly enhance the treatment options available to cancer patients in the state, helping doctors select the most appropriate course of action based on precise diagnostic information.
PET scans are invaluable in the detection and treatment of cancer. The procedure allows doctors to assess the effectiveness of ongoing treatment, determine whether surgery can be performed to remove a tumor, and evaluate the spread of cancer to other parts of the body. This advanced technology will allow patients to avoid the time-consuming and costly travel to PGI in Chandigarh, streamlining their care and reducing the burden on families.
The introduction of the PET scan at AIIMS Bilaspur will make it the first healthcare institution in the region to offer this service, which will be available at affordable rates compared to private hospitals where the cost can range from ₹10,000 to ₹25,000. At PGI Chandigarh, the cost is approximately ₹8,500, but patients still face additional expenses for travel and injections. AIIMS Bilaspur aims to make the process more accessible and cost-effective for the residents of Himachal Pradesh.

With the PET scan service set to launch soon, AIIMS Bilaspur continues to strengthen its position as a key healthcare provider in the region.
