In a groundbreaking initiative, Himachal Pradesh will incorporate QR codes for the identification of ballot boxes during the upcoming Panchayati Raj elections. Announced by State Election Commissioner Anil Khachi at a high-level meeting in Bilaspur, this pioneering move aims to enhance transparency and streamline the electoral process.

Khachi, addressing the assembly of officials, emphasized the importance of this unique initiative in boosting the efficiency and credibility of the elections. The integration of modern technology, including providing real-time election-related data—from nominations to results—on the State Election Commission’s online portal, will enable better accessibility and openness in the electoral process.

The meeting saw the participation of key district officials, including Deputy Commissioner Abid Hussain Sadiq, Additional Deputy Commissioner Dr. Nidhi Patel, District Panchayat Officer Tilak Raj, and various Sub-Divisional Magistrates (SDMs) and Block Development Officers (BDOs). Khachi urged all officials to ensure the principles of fairness, transparency, and efficiency were upheld during the election process.

Voter Accessibility and Awareness Focus

In addition to the technological innovation, the Election Commissioner emphasized the importance of voter accessibility. Special committees will inspect polling stations to ensure that necessary facilities are in place, with all stations located on the ground floor to assist voters with mobility challenges.

Khachi also stressed the need for robust voter education campaigns, encouraging officials to use Gram Sabha meetings as a platform for updating the electoral rolls, allowing for the addition, deletion, or correction of voter names. Training programs for election staff were also highlighted as essential to ensure smooth operations.

A dedicated media cell will be established at the district level to monitor and manage media coverage, ensuring that accurate and timely election-related information is disseminated to the public.

Reaffirming the importance of maintaining a fair election environment, Khachi reiterated the need to adhere to the Model Code of Conduct. He urged officials to complete all necessary preparations on time, aiming to provide voters with a seamless and efficient experience during the elections.
