The cold front has affected multiple regions, including Una, Bilaspur, Kullu, and Solan, where the mercury is hovering around zero degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti are facing even harsher conditions, with temperatures dipping to minus degrees. The harsh winter is compounded by light fog in the plains, adding to the chill.

Third Cold-Related Death in Shimla
The capital city of Shimla has witnessed its third death due to cold weather in just the past fortnight. The latest victim, Surinder Kumar, a resident of Bhagwat in Uttar Pradesh, had been working as a tailor in Shimla for several years. Tragically, he succumbed to the severe cold, becoming the third person in the city to lose their life due to the harsh winter.
Fatal Fall on Snow in Chaupal
In another unfortunate incident, a woman tragically lost her life in Chaupal after slipping on snow outside her house in Saranh village. Bimla Devi, aged 50, fell into a field while walking through the snow-covered area. The winter conditions have led to several such accidents across the state, where snow accumulation and icy pathways are proving hazardous to residents.
Temperature Records and Freezing Cold in Higher Altitudes
At Tabo, in the higher altitudes of Himachal, the minimum temperature recorded was a chilling -11.3°C. Other areas like Kukumseri (5°C), Kalpa (1.8°C), and Reckong Peo (-0.4°C) are also experiencing frigid conditions. In the plains, Una recorded 0°C, Barthin 0.1°C, Bajaura 0.7°C, and Solan 0.8°C, reflecting the widespread cold snap.
Freezing of Water Pipes in Lahaul-Spiti and Kinnaur
The severe cold in the Lahaul-Spiti and Kinnaur regions has resulted in the freezing of water pipes, with water running in drains also turning into ice. These regions are experiencing the coldest temperatures in the state, and local residents are struggling with disrupted water supply and frozen infrastructure.
Clear Weather Expected, but Fog Persists
The weather department has forecast clear skies across Himachal Pradesh from Friday, which may bring some relief from the cold. However, light fog is still expected to persist in certain areas, particularly in the plain districts of Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Mandi, Kangra, and Chamba, limiting visibility and contributing to the already severe cold.
Road Travel Affected by Freezing Conditions
The ongoing cold has also disrupted road travel, especially in high-altitude areas. However, a positive development occurred on Thursday, with the Manali-Keylong bus service resuming operations, providing some relief to travelers in the region.
The state continues to battle this unusually harsh winter, with residents advised to take extra precautions against the biting cold. While the clear weather forecast offers some hope, the chill is expected to persist, making it essential for the authorities and locals to stay vigilant.
