Shimla – A disturbing revelation has emerged from an Obesity Outreach Program organized by IGMC Shimla’s Department of General Surgery and the Obesity Surgery Society of India. According to findings, 14% of Himachal Pradesh’s population, approximately 10.5 lakh people, are obese, a figure considerably higher than the national average of 5%. The alarming rise in obesity rates poses a significant health challenge for the state and calls for immediate action.

The Root Causes: Changing Lifestyles and Dietary Habits
During the event, Dr. Randeep Wadhawan, patron of the Obesity Surgery Society of India, discussed the contributing factors behind this alarming trend. He attributed the rise in obesity to shifting lifestyles, poor dietary habits, and reduced physical activity. Dr. Wadhawan emphasized that despite Shimla’s relatively healthier environment, with its walking culture, the state’s obesity rates could mirror the national crisis if proactive steps are not taken.

“India’s obesity prevalence stands at 5%, which means 7 crore people are affected. Himachal’s higher rate is alarming, and the number could escalate if unhealthy trends persist,” Dr. Wadhawan stated. He advocated for a multi-pronged approach, including lifestyle management, medical treatment, and surgical interventions like robotic and endoscopic techniques, to tackle the obesity epidemic.

Dietary Habits and Screen Time: Key Contributors to Obesity
Dr. Vivek Bindal, the organizing president of the program, underscored the role of poor dietary choices and sedentary behaviors in contributing to the obesity crisis. One of the major issues highlighted was the widespread availability of inexpensive junk food. Dr. Bindal noted that in villages, children often choose unhealthy snacks like chips and biscuits, which cost as little as Rs. 2 or Rs. 5. These dietary habits, combined with reduced physical activity due to excessive screen time, are pushing more people toward obesity.

“The consumption of junk food and a sedentary lifestyle due to excessive mobile screen usage are paving the way for a future health crisis,” Dr. Bindal warned. He stressed the importance of addressing this issue early by educating children and their parents about the importance of a balanced diet and regular physical activity.

Early Intervention: The Importance of Healthy Habits
Dr. Bindal emphasized the need for early intervention in the fight against obesity. He encouraged parents and schools to take an active role in instilling healthy habits in children. “Children must be educated about proper nutrition and the importance of exercise from an early age. Prevention is better than cure,” he remarked.

The Role of Obesity Surgery: A Comprehensive Approach
Dr. Puneet Mahajan, organizing secretary of the Obesity Surgery Society of India, spoke about the society’s efforts in providing advanced solutions for obesity management. Established 20 years ago, the society has grown to include around 600 members nationwide. Dr. Mahajan emphasized that while surgery can be an effective tool in managing severe cases of obesity, it should not be viewed as a standalone solution.

“The pyramid approach—starting with lifestyle changes, moving to medical treatment, and resorting to surgical interventions in extreme cases—ensures comprehensive and long-term care,” Dr. Mahajan explained. He highlighted that lifestyle changes, including diet and exercise, are the cornerstone of any successful obesity management program.

A Collective Effort: Addressing Obesity at All Levels
Experts at the event pointed out that combating obesity requires a collective effort from society, healthcare providers, and individuals. As Himachal Pradesh experiences a shift in food habits and lifestyles, awareness programs like this one aim to equip people with the knowledge and tools to make healthier choices.

It was reiterated that obesity is not just an individual concern but a societal issue. As the state witnesses changing food patterns and more sedentary lifestyles, initiatives like the Obesity Outreach Program are crucial in addressing these challenges and promoting healthier habits among the population.

A Call for Awareness and Action
The Obesity Outreach Program served as a wake-up call for Himachal Pradesh to address the growing obesity crisis before it spirals out of control. While Shimla’s walking culture and natural environment have helped keep obesity rates lower than other urbanized states, the rise in unhealthy dietary habits and sedentary lifestyles poses a serious threat to public health. By fostering awareness, promoting healthy habits, and offering advanced solutions for weight management, Himachal Pradesh can take significant strides toward curbing the obesity epidemic and ensuring a healthier future for its residents.
