Keylong, 06 December – In a significant move aimed at ensuring public safety during harsh winter conditions, Rahul Kumar, Deputy Commissioner and Chairman of the District Disaster Management Authority for Lahaul and Spiti, has announced that traffic on the Darcha-Sarchu (National Highway-03) and Darcha-Shinkula (D-S) roads will be completely suspended from 7 December. This restriction will remain in place until the arrival of next year’s summer season, effective from both directions of travel.

Why the Traffic Ban is Necessary

The order comes as a precautionary measure due to the severe cold temperatures experienced in the region. According to the Deputy Commissioner, the occurrence of black ice on Baralacha Top and Shinkula Top passes, caused by freezing temperatures, has led to unsafe road conditions. These dangerous icy patches make the roads perilous for vehicular movement, increasing the risk of accidents and passenger stranding.

Kumar further highlighted that in previous years, travelers have been caught in similar situations due to sudden snowfalls in these high-altitude regions, making rescue operations extremely difficult and risky. The authorities have taken this step to prevent any such occurrences and ensure the safety of all individuals who may otherwise be exposed to hazardous conditions.

Impact on Travelers and Enforcement

The Deputy Commissioner explained that the closure of these roads will prevent traffic from accessing these dangerous passes. Given the challenging terrain, especially during the winter months, attempts to traverse these routes put both travelers and rescue personnel at great risk.

The authorities have made it clear that any violation of the traffic closure order will lead to stringent legal consequences. As per the Disaster Management Act of 2005, violators may face penalties, including imprisonment for up to one year, fines, or both. The provisions under Section 51 of the Act will be enforced to ensure compliance with this crucial safety measure.

The decision to suspend traffic on these specific roads underscores the administration’s commitment to preventing accidents and preserving human life. Travelers planning to pass through Lahaul and Spiti during the winter season are advised to seek alternative routes and stay updated with local regulations and weather advisories.
