Himachal Pradesh, as part of its ongoing efforts to combat tuberculosis (TB), has launched the 100-day Ni-Kshay Abhiyan, which aims to ensure early detection, treatment, and community engagement to achieve a TB-free state. The initiative is also supported by new health education programs aimed at raising awareness about diseases from an early age, starting in schools. The campaign was launched with the flagging off of a mobile van equipped with portable X-ray machines, enhancing the state’s ability to screen residents in remote areas and identify TB cases early.

1. Ni-Kshay Abhiyan: A Comprehensive Effort to Eradicate TB

The Ni-Kshay Abhiyan is a key part of Himachal Pradesh’s strategy to eradicate TB, particularly in vulnerable communities. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, who attended the event and participated in a TB screening, emphasized that the state is on the right track to eliminating TB. The initiative is not just focused on medical treatment but also involves community participation and education to ensure that every individual in the state gets timely diagnosis and access to treatment.

“We are confident that Himachal Pradesh will soon be TB-free,” said Chief Minister Sukhu, underscoring the state’s determination to tackle this public health challenge head-on. In a bid to strengthen this mission, the state government has allocated an additional ₹2 crore under the Chief Minister’s TB Eradication Scheme to further support the program.

2. Health Reforms and Strengthening Healthcare Infrastructure

To bolster the healthcare infrastructure in Himachal Pradesh, the government is also implementing a series of reforms, including upgrading emergency departments across hospitals and equipping medical colleges with the latest diagnostic tools. These upgrades are expected to improve the overall quality of healthcare and ensure better detection and treatment of TB and other diseases.

Another major reform is the overhaul of the referral system in government health institutions. The new system aims to create a more efficient and comprehensive care system, ensuring that patients have timely access to the right healthcare facilities.

3. Attracting and Retaining Medical Professionals

A key challenge in improving healthcare services in Himachal Pradesh has been the shortage of medical professionals, especially in rural areas. To address this, the state government is considering raising the monthly allowances for super-specialist doctors from ₹60,000 to ₹1.75 lakh, and for specialist doctors, the allowance would increase to ₹1 lakh. These measures are aimed at attracting and retaining skilled medical professionals in the state, ensuring that people have access to the best healthcare possible.

“The introduction of these incentives will ensure better healthcare access for the people of Himachal Pradesh,” said Chief Minister Sukhu.

4. Focus on Older Adults and Early Diagnosis

With 13% of Himachal Pradesh’s population over the age of 60, the state is placing a special focus on early diagnosis and preventive measures for older adults. The Ni-Kshay Abhiyan also highlights the importance of raising awareness about TB symptoms and encouraging older adults to undergo regular testing.

The Chief Minister urged all residents to participate actively in the campaign and support community efforts to reduce the spread of TB. “The involvement of the entire community is essential to eliminating TB,” he emphasized.

5. High Screening Rates and Financial Assistance for TB Patients

Health and Family Welfare Minister Col. (Dr.) Dhani Ram Shandil pointed out that Himachal Pradesh has one of the highest TB screening rates in the country, a statistic that showcases the state’s commitment to tackling the disease. He further emphasized the importance of timely check-ups, which play a crucial role in preventing the spread of TB.

To assist those affected by TB, the state government provides financial support to help cover the nutritional needs of patients. This support ensures that individuals undergoing treatment have the necessary resources to aid in their recovery.

6. Environmental and Industrial Reforms to Promote Sustainable Development

Alongside the health reforms, Chief Minister Sukhu also highlighted Himachal Pradesh’s ongoing environmental initiatives. He described the state’s forests as the “lungs of North India,” contributing significantly to the region’s ecological balance. He appealed to the Union government to recognize the state’s conservation efforts by granting a “Green Bonus,” which would reward the state’s commitment to environmental sustainability.

The state is also introducing a revised industrial policy aimed at encouraging green industries and ensuring that development does not come at the cost of the environment. This policy aligns with the broader goal of sustainable development while ensuring a cleaner and healthier future for the residents of Himachal Pradesh.

7. The Road Ahead: Pledging for a TB-Free India

At the conclusion of the event, Chief Minister Sukhu distributed Ni-Kshay nutrition kits to TB patients, reinforcing the state’s support for individuals affected by the disease. He also honored various organizations that have contributed to the success of the Ni-Kshay Abhiyan campaign.

In a show of commitment, the Chief Minister administered a pledge for a TB-free India, marking the state’s ongoing dedication to eliminating the disease. The collective efforts of the government, healthcare professionals, and the community will be essential in achieving this goal and ensuring that Himachal Pradesh leads the way in becoming TB-free.

Himachal Pradesh’s proactive approach to eradicating TB, through initiatives like the Ni-Kshay Abhiyan, is a model of how early detection, effective treatment, and community engagement can help eliminate a public health threat. With strong governmental support, infrastructural reforms, and an emphasis on healthcare education, the state is well on its way to becoming a TB-free state. As the Chief Minister said, “Together, we can overcome TB and build a healthier, stronger Himachal Pradesh.”
