Hamirpur District to Embrace Bengaluru’s Carnation and Gerbera Flowers, Boosting Horticulture and Economy
Introduction of New Flower Varieties to Enhance Local Horticulture
Hamirpur district in Himachal Pradesh is set to introduce two famous varieties of flowers – the carnation and gerbera – native to Bengaluru, with an aim to revitalize the local horticulture sector and provide new economic opportunities for farmers. An 11-member delegation from the Himachal Pradesh Horticulture Department recently underwent specialized training at the prestigious Indian Institute of Horticulture and Research Center in Bengaluru to explore the potential of these flowers in Hamirpur’s soil.
A Step Towards Economic Growth and Horticulture Development
Led by District Deputy Director Rajeshwar Parmar, the delegation’s visit focused on understanding the best practices for cultivating carnations and gerberas in the Naidun, Bijhari, and Hamirpur blocks. The training emphasized the economic benefits of introducing these flowers, with the potential to not only boost farmers’ incomes but also foster tourism in the region. Rajeshwar Parmar noted that the cultivation of these flowers will open up new avenues for employment and attract visitors interested in flower tourism.
Suitable Flower Varieties for Hamirpur
During the training, the delegation studied over 70 varieties of flowers and selected the best-suited ones for the district’s climate and soil. Among the chosen varieties were popular carnations such as Widget, Cleos, Canoe, and Purple Tag, as well as gerbera varieties like Tororoso, Casablanca, Pavitra, Mamute, and Soren. These varieties were selected based on their suitability for local conditions, promising both quality and high yield.
Visit to Florence Flora: A Model of Success
The delegation also visited the renowned Florence Flora Company in Hasan village, Bengaluru, which has been supplying high-quality flower plants to Himachal farmers for over two decades. At this flower farm, the officials observed the cultivation of 50 different carnation species and 20 gerbera species, gaining valuable insights into the cultivation and management of these flowers. After carefully evaluating the available varieties, the team selected 4-5 types of carnations and gerberas that would be ideal for Hamirpur’s horticultural landscape.
Expected Benefits for Farmers and the Local Economy
According to Rajeshwar Parmar, the introduction of carnation and gerbera cultivation is expected to provide a significant boost to local farmers’ incomes by diversifying their agricultural practices. With these flowers in demand across domestic and international markets, farmers will have access to lucrative opportunities. The initiative also has the potential to create jobs in flower production, packaging, and transportation, ultimately benefiting the entire community.
Integrating Horticulture with Tourism
In addition to improving farmers’ livelihoods, the cultivation of carnations and gerberas is expected to play a vital role in promoting tourism in Hamirpur. The region could potentially develop a niche market for flower-based tourism, drawing visitors to enjoy the beauty of flower farms and participate in horticultural activities. This synergy between horticulture and tourism will further strengthen Hamirpur’s economy.
A Promising Future for Hamirpur’s Horticulture Sector
With the proper implementation of this new initiative, the cultivation of carnations and gerberas is poised to be a game-changer for Hamirpur. The training received by the horticulture department officials will soon be put into practice, and the positive effects on local farmers and the economy are expected to unfold in the coming months. By combining modern horticultural techniques with the charm of flower tourism, Hamirpur is setting the stage for a more prosperous and sustainable future.
