Shimla, November 30 – The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today lashed out at Himachal Pradesh Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kuldeep Pathania, urging him not to act under the pressure of the state government to unseat nine of its legislators. The party accused the Speaker of attempting to unseat the MLAs in an “undemocratic and dictatorial manner.”
BJP Takes a Strong Stand on Alleged Unconstitutional Move
Randhir Sharma, the BJP’s chief spokesperson and MLA from Shri Naina Devi, expressed his concerns at a press conference, criticizing the Speaker’s recent statements regarding actions to be taken against the nine BJP MLAs. The Speaker had suggested that decisions would be made in response to complaints over contempt of the House involving the legislators.
Sharma stated firmly, “If the Speaker decides to take unconstitutional actions against these nine MLAs, the BJP will not hesitate to challenge it. We will fight this move legally and ensure justice for our elected representatives.”
Accusations of Political Influence on the Speaker’s Decisions
Sharma accused Kuldeep Pathania of acting under the influence of the Congress-led state government, arguing that the Speaker, while holding a constitutional position, should maintain neutrality and fairness in his actions. “The Speaker is expected to uphold the dignity of his office and act impartially. It is unfortunate if he is being pressured into taking action against the democratically-elected MLAs,” said Sharma.
He also pointed out that the issue of contempt was raised during the Budget session of the Vidhan Sabha, but no action could be taken at that time because the Speaker was absent. According to Sharma, the complaint against the nine MLAs had resurfaced only after the recent removal of six Chief Parliamentary Secretaries (CPSs), leading to speculation that the timing of the Speaker’s statement was politically motivated.
BJP Voices Concerns Over Reduced Winter Session
Sharma also criticized the state government’s decision to limit the winter session of the Vidhan Sabha to just four sittings, accusing the Congress government of being afraid to face the opposition. “The government is avoiding the Opposition because it knows it cannot defend itself on key issues like corruption, illegal mining, and drug trafficking,” Sharma said.
The BJP has vowed to aggressively raise these issues during the brief session, which, according to Sharma, will see the party strongly voicing its concerns and demanding accountability from the state government.
BJP Warns of Legal Action and Political Pushback
The BJP has made it clear that it will not tolerate what it sees as an attempt to undermine its party members through political maneuvering. The party plans to take legal action if the Speaker proceeds with any unconstitutional decision to disqualify its legislators, with Sharma assuring that the BJP will not be intimidated by threats or political pressure.
In response to the Speaker’s remarks, the BJP has called on Kuldeep Pathania to respect the principles of democracy and the sanctity of the legislative process, urging him to make decisions based on the rule of law rather than political influence. The party also stressed that it would continue to fight for the rights of its members and ensure that their voices are heard in the Vidhan Sabha.
A Showdown Between Government and Opposition in the Winter Session
As the state prepares for the four-day winter session, tensions between the ruling Congress and the Opposition are expected to reach new heights. The BJP is determined to use the limited session to expose what it sees as the government’s failures, with a focus on allegations of corruption and mismanagement. The party is confident that its pushback will not only defend its members but also hold the state government accountable for its actions.
