The 19th Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) meeting of Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Solan took place at Dr. YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni. Chaired by Vice Chancellor Prof. Rajeshwar Singh Chandel, the session saw the participation of top agricultural scientists, experts, and progressive farmers. The meeting aimed to address various agricultural issues and review KVK’s contributions to the region’s farming community.
Zinc Deficiency in Nalagarh’s Wheat and Rice Fields: A Growing Concern
One of the critical topics discussed at the meeting was zinc deficiency in the soils of Nalagarh, highlighted by Dr. Seema Kansal, Deputy Director of Agriculture, Solan. The deficiency is linked to extensive wheat and rice cultivation, which, due to their high phytate content, inhibit the absorption of essential nutrients like zinc. Dr. Kansal pointed out that modern crop varieties, which are less efficient in nutrient uptake, have exacerbated this issue. She emphasized the importance of soil health management strategies to combat this challenge and ensure the long-term productivity of these fields.
Progressive Farmer Concerns: Dry Grass Shortage and Pest Infestation
Madan Gopal Sharma, a progressive farmer from the region, raised concerns regarding the shortage of dry grass for mulching, an essential practice for retaining soil moisture and enhancing fertility. In response, Prof. Chandel recommended that KVK explore alternative materials for mulching to help farmers mitigate this issue. Additionally, Dr. Yograj Chauhan, Director of the Agriculture Technology Management Agency (ATMA), shared concerns about severe pinworm infestations in tomatoes in Ber village. He suggested organizing practical training camps with hands-on field trials to equip farmers with the necessary tools to manage pest-related challenges effectively.
Reviewing Past Achievements and Looking Ahead
The meeting also included a review of KVK’s progress during the 2023-24 period. Dr. Amit Vikram, KVK Coordinator, presented updates on the implementation of recommendations from the previous SAC meeting. He outlined the actions taken and introduced new proposals for the coming year. Additionally, the launch of several new publications was announced, including booklets on natural farming, capsicum, and chrysanthemum cultivation. These resources are designed to provide farmers with the latest information on sustainable farming practices and crop management techniques.
Linking Farmers with Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs)
Prof. Chandel stressed the importance of connecting farmers with Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs), which can help improve marketing channels and resource access. He encouraged KVK to assess the impact of its technology dissemination efforts, particularly through field trials and front-line demonstrations. Prof. Chandel also lauded KVK for winning the ICAR Best KVK award for Himachal Pradesh, recognizing its contribution to enhancing agricultural productivity in the region.
Encouraging Scientific Research and Extension Work
Dr. Rajesh Rana, Principal Scientist at ICAR-Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute, Zone 1, emphasized the need for scientists to focus on publishing their work in high-impact journals and registering their technologies for wider dissemination. He also called for a stronger focus on extension work, ensuring that research reaches the farmers who need it most.
Exhibition of KVK-Developed Technologies and Innovations
An exhibition was held during the meeting, showcasing KVK-developed technologies and agricultural products. Farmers and officials explored these innovations and discussed their potential applications in local agriculture. Key recommendations from the exhibition focused on nutrient management, pest control, and the efficient use of agricultural resources. The goal was to help farmers adopt these technologies to increase their productivity and sustainability.
Collaborative Efforts for Sustainable Agriculture
The meeting underscored the importance of collaboration between KVK, scientists, and farmers to address challenges such as soil nutrient deficiencies and pest infestations. Participants called for more practical training programs, research on sustainable farming practices, and improved dissemination of new technologies to ensure the long-term success of agriculture in Himachal Pradesh.
Future Outlook: Enhancing Agricultural Practices and Support for Farmers
As the meeting concluded, it became clear that KVK Solan and its stakeholders are committed to improving agricultural practices in the region. With a focus on addressing pressing challenges like soil health, pest control, and resource management, the future initiatives will focus on providing farmers with the tools and knowledge they need to thrive. Prof. Chandel’s call for greater collaboration and assessment of technology adoption ensures that KVK continues to evolve in response to the ever-changing needs of the farming community.
By fostering innovation, providing practical solutions, and supporting research, KVK aims to ensure a brighter, more sustainable future for agriculture in Himachal Pradesh.
