Shimla (Himachal Pradesh), 26 November, Tuesday

Kumud Sharma, Diary Times: Constitution Day, also known as “Samvidhan Divas,” was celebrated with great enthusiasm at Government Degree College (GDC) Kupvi in Himachal Pradesh. The event, aimed at commemorating the adoption of the Indian Constitution, witnessed active participation from both students and faculty members. This day, observed annually on November 26, marks the historic day in 1949 when the Constituent Assembly of India adopted the Constitution, which came into effect on January 26, 1950. The observance of this day serves as a reminder of the significance of the Constitution in shaping India’s democratic framework and ensuring justice and equality for all its citizens.

Principal Devraj Sharma Addresses the Students

The highlight of the Constitution Day celebrations at GDC Kupvi was the address delivered by the college’s Principal, Devraj Sharma. In his speech, Principal Sharma emphasized the importance of understanding the Constitution and its role in safeguarding the rights and freedoms of every individual in the country. He explained that the Constitution not only provides a legal framework for the functioning of the government but also serves as a guiding document for the nation, ensuring equality, justice, and democracy for all its citizens.

Sharma pointed out that the Constitution is a living document that reflects the vision of the founding fathers of the nation, including Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, who is regarded as the principal architect of the Indian Constitution. He encouraged students to familiarize themselves with the provisions of the Constitution and understand the fundamental rights and duties it enshrines. Principal Sharma further highlighted the relevance of the Constitution in contemporary India, urging the students to contribute positively to the country’s progress by upholding the values of justice, equality, and secularism.

Educational Activities and Discussions

Following the principal’s address, the students engaged in a series of educational activities that focused on the themes of the Constitution. A special interactive session was organized, where students discussed the key features of the Indian Constitution, including the Preamble, Fundamental Rights, and Directive Principles of State Policy. This session was designed to enhance the students’ understanding of how the Constitution functions as the bedrock of Indian democracy and protects the rights of all citizens.

The students also participated in a quiz competition based on constitutional knowledge, which not only tested their awareness but also fostered a spirit of curiosity and learning about the history and structure of the Indian government. The quiz covered a wide range of topics, from the historical background of the Indian Constitution to the role of key constitutional bodies such as the Election Commission, Judiciary, and Parliament.

Promoting Constitutional Awareness

The event at GDC Kupvi was part of a larger initiative to promote constitutional awareness among young citizens, encouraging them to take pride in the country’s democratic traditions. The celebration of Constitution Day at the college was a step towards fostering a deeper appreciation for the values of justice, equality, and liberty that are enshrined in the Indian Constitution.

The observance of this day served not only as a reminder of the historical importance of the Constitution but also as a call to action for the younger generation to actively participate in the democratic processes, respect the rule of law, and contribute towards building a more inclusive and progressive society.

Constitution Day at GDC Kupvi was an enriching experience for both students and faculty, promoting the ideals of the Indian Constitution and reinforcing the importance of constitutional literacy.

The celebration of this day underscored the need for all citizens, especially the youth, to recognize and uphold the values of justice, equality, and democracy in their daily lives. The event was a fitting tribute to the visionary leaders who drafted the Constitution and laid the foundation for a vibrant and inclusive India.
