Shimla (Himachal Pradesh), 24 November, Sunday

Kumud Sharma, Diary Times: The mercury suddenly took a turn in the tribal districts of the state, the main reason for this was the heavy snowfall recorded in the afternoon in Atal Tunnel Rohtang and Lahaul Spiti as well as other high altitude areas. The snowfall in the high peaks of Himachal Pradesh, which is facing drought, including CB Range, Koksar Rohtang Pass, Kanjum Pass and Baralacha, since afternoon has changed the entire temperature and cold has arrived. Apart from this, afternoon snowfall in Lahaul Valley and Gulaba has also changed the weather.

Due to heavy snowfall, continuous advisory is being issued by Lahaul-Spiti Police due to continuous snowfall in Atal Tunnel Rohtang and its surrounding areas. Mayank Chaudhary, SP (Lahaul-Spiti Police) issued an advisory to not travel in areas affected by heavy snowfall and to carry snow chains and winter tyres in vehicles during urgent travel. The SP said, “There is a possibility of the roads in Lahaul Spiti and its surrounding areas being slippery due to the accumulation of snow.” The SP has asked tourists to carry warm clothes, food, water as well as a first aid kit for emergency during their urgent travels. Also, travellers and local people have been called upon to get the weather forecast update from the local administration and inform their families before the journey. The onset of heavy snowfall has brought hope for the farmers and apple growers residing in Kullu, Lahaul-Spiti and Chamba districts. Also, for the tourism businessmen, the snowfall has raised full hopes of a boom in tourism and increased occupancy. The continuous snowfall has shrunk the cold in remote districts, the temperature is continuously falling.

Heavy snowfall is also being recorded in the tribal district Chamba, due to which the tribal area Pangi and its surrounding high peaks have recorded snowfall of four to five centimetres, due to which people in the tribal areas are huddled under blankets.

The state meteorological department has predicted heavy snowfall in the high altitude areas adjoining the Chamba, Kangra, Kinnaur, Kullu and Lahaul-Spiti districts of the state. With the onset of snowfall, the temperature of four places has dropped to minus, along with this, the morning started with light fog in Bilaspur.

Due to increasing cold, Saturday and Sunday started with bright sunshine in the capital Shimla. According to the Meteorological Department, there will not be much drop in the temperature of the capital in the next three days, but after six to seven days, the cold will increase due to the mercury reaching two degrees Celsius in the areas around Shimla. The Meteorological Department has issued a fog warning in Bilaspur and Sundernagar, due to which yellow alerts are active to advise drivers to be extra cautious while driving.

After fresh snowfall in the areas around remote districts of the state and high peaks, there is now hope of rain to end the drought, but it is not going to be that easy for tourists and local people to get relief from the cold.
