Shimla, November 12: Minimal invasive surgery has been started in Indira Gandhi Medical College. The team of doctors of IGMC has successfully performed the surgery. Laparoscopic surgery is a surgery with faster recovery and less complications for patients. Currently, such procedures are available only in select central government institutions and private corporate hospitals, where they are expensive and out of reach of many patients. In such a situation, patients will get benefit from the introduction of laparoscopic surgery in IGMC.

Dr. UK Chandel, HOD of Surgery Department, told that earlier they used to treat patients only through open surgery whereas now for food pipe cancer, surgery of the chest part has been done through laparoscopy. The entire surgery for stomach and rectal cancer has been done through laparoscopy. Such advanced surgery is not done routinely in IGMC and this is the first time that surgery for food pipe cancer has been done using laparoscopy.

Principal of IGMC Shimla, Dr. Sita says that IGMC is moving towards advanced surgery. This has been possible due to the important support of nursing staff, operation theatre assistants and other support staff. Most of the expenses in IGMC are covered under Himcare card, which is benefiting the poor patients.
