55 killed, many trapped in Israeli attack on residential building in Gaza

At least 55 Palestinians were killed and dozens more injured in an Israeli attack on a residential building in the northern Gaza town of Beit Lahiya on Tuesday, the Palestinian Civil Emergency Service reported.
It said many of the victims were believed to be still trapped under the rubble. The official Palestinian news agency WAFA and Hamas media had earlier reported the same figure.

There was no immediate Israeli comment.
On Monday, the Palestinian Civil Emergency Service said about 100,000 people were trapped without medical or food supplies in Jabalia, Beit Lahiya and Beit Hanoun. Reuters could not independently confirm the number.
The emergency service said its operations had been halted by a three-week Israeli offensive in northern Gaza, where Israel said it had previously eliminated Hamas fighting forces during a year-long war.
Israel said the offensive was aimed at preventing Hamas from regrouping.
