Baghdad, Iraq: Iraq has condemned Israel’s use of its airspace to attack neighbouring Iran in a protest letter sent to UN chief Antonio Guterres and the UN Security Council, Baghdad said on Monday.

A statement by government spokesman Bassim Alawadi said the letter condemned “the Zionist entity’s clear violation of Iraq’s airspace and sovereignty by using Iraqi airspace to attack the Islamic Republic of Iran on October 26”.

Alawadi said the Iraqi Foreign Ministry would also bring up “this violation” in talks with Israel’s close ally and top arms provider the United States.

Israel launched airstrikes on military targets in Iran on Saturday, risking a further escalation of regional tensions more than a year after the Gaza war and a month after the Israel-Hezbollah war in Lebanon.

The Israeli attack was in response to a missile strike by Iran on October 1, which was a revenge for the killing of Iran-backed militant leaders and a Revolutionary Guard commander.

The Iranian military said some Israeli aircraft had fired “some long-range missiles from a distance” inside US patrolled airspace over Iraq.

Baghdad has close ties with Tehran but also has a strategic partnership with Washington, whose troops are in Iraq as part of an international anti-jihadist coalition.

While the Iraqi government has tried to avoid being dragged into the growing regional conflict, some pro-Iran factions have launched attacks on US forces in the region and claimed responsibility for drones sent to Israel.

The influential Kataeb Hezbollah, a group allied to Tehran, on Sunday condemned the Israeli use of Iraqi airspace to attack Iran, calling it a “dangerous precedent”.

It accused the United States of complicity in the Israeli attack and warned both would respond to this “aggression”.
