MEXICO CITY, Mexico: At least 24 people were killed and five others injured when a cargo truck and a passenger bus collided in northern Mexico on Saturday, local authorities said.

“According to the preliminary information available so far, 24 passengers have died and five people are injured who are being treated,” Rodrigo Reyes, a senior official in the Zacatecas state government, said in a video on social media.

The accident occurred on a highway linking Zacatecas to the central state of Aguascalientes when a container full of corn fell off the truck, causing the bus to overturn.

The bus was traveling between the city of Tepic in western Nayarit state and Ciudad Juarez on the US border.

Reyes said the highway was closed to traffic and the army, National Guard and civil defense forces were deployed.
