Heavy rains cause structural damage in Shimla’s Sanjauli
Continuous rains in Shimla led to the collapse of the retaining wall of the SPM ground in Sanjauli’s Engineghar ward.
Shimla, September 15: Continuous rains in Shimla led to the collapse of the retaining wall of the SPM ground in Sanjauli’s Engineghar ward. The incident, which took place on Friday night, has severely damaged the ground, causing major cracks in the ground and increasing the risk of landslides. The ground, which was the only playground for local children, is now unusable due to the collapse. Moreover, small houses located below the ground are now in danger and the surrounding fence has also been destroyed.
Lack of proper drainage system in the area has been cited as a contributing factor, as rainwater from the road flows into the ground, leading to soil erosion. Engineghar councillor Ankush Verma said that heavy rains in the last two days have led to landslides, citing lack of drainage system as a major issue.
Besides, other parts of the city, including areas around Navbahar and St. Bedes College, have faced landslides and road blockages. Mayor Surendra Chauhan has sought damage reports from the city wards and plans to start reconstruction work as soon as the rainy season ends.
