New Delhi, August 21: Former US President Obama said that America is ready for a new chapter with Kamala Harris in the lead role.
He said this while addressing the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.
The four-day event began on Tuesday.
Obama said, “America is ready for Harris’s presidency.” He further said, “America is waiting for a new chapter, America is waiting for a better story. We are ready for President Kamala Harris and Kamala Harris is ready for this post.”
Obama said, “We have a chance to choose someone who has spent her whole life trying to give people the same opportunities America gave her… It’s been 16 years since I had the honor of accepting this party’s nomination for president… Looking back, I can say without question that my first big decision as your nominee made me your best friend… History will remember Joe Biden as a great president who defended democracy at a time of great danger. I am proud to call him my president and even more proud to call him my friend…”
Obama highlighted Harris’ history as a prosecutor against big banks and child molesters. “In the aftermath of the home mortgage crisis, she pushed me and my administration very hard to make sure that homeowners got a fair settlement,” the former president said.
Obama said Kamala Harris and Tim Walz believe in an America “where we include everyone…and no matter what our politics suggest, I think most Americans understand that…a sense of mutual respect should be part of our message.”
The former US president told Democrats that “Harris will focus on your problems” and “will not just serve her voters or punish those who refuse to bend the knee.”
Obama said the rest of the world is watching what happens in the November elections.
Praising Walz, Obama said he is “the kind of person who should be in politics – someone who was born in a small town, served his country, taught kids, coached football and cared for his neighbors…he knows who he is and what’s important.”
Continuing his attacks on Trump, Obama said the Republican candidate “sees power as nothing more than a means to an end…”
