Thailand’s new PM thanks PM Modi for his congratulations, calls for strengthening ties
New Delhi, Aug 19: Thailand’s newly elected Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra on Monday thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his congratulatory message after her victory in the recently held elections.
“Thank you Prime Minister Narendra Modi for your warm congratulatory message,” Paetongtarn Shinawatra wrote on social media platform X.
“I look forward to working closely with you to further strengthen our bilateral ties in the areas of trade and investment, culture, people-to-people contacts and tourism, especially to increase air travel between the two countries,” she added.
Expressing her hope to further strengthen bilateral ties between India and Thailand, the newly elected Prime Minister said, “I am confident that we can further strengthen our existing ties and explore untapped potential to create even more opportunities for both our countries, people and others.”
Earlier, Prime Minister Modi had congratulated Paetongtarn Shinawatra on her victory.
“Congratulations Paetongtarn Shinawatra on your election as Prime Minister of Thailand. Best wishes for a very successful tenure. Look forward to working with you to further strengthen bilateral ties between India and Thailand, which are based on a strong foundation of civilisational, cultural and people-to-people ties,” he said in a post on X.
Paetongtarn Shinawatra, 37, was elected as Thailand’s prime minister on August 16, making her the second youngest woman to hold the post in Thai history. She became the third member of the Shinawatra family to serve as Thailand’s prime minister, following in the footsteps of her father and aunt.
Her aunt, Yingluck Shinawatra, was Thailand’s first woman prime minister and the country’s youngest prime minister in 60 years before she was removed from office on May 7, 2014 by a Constitutional Court ruling.
Paetongtarn Shinawatra was elected on August 14 after the court dismissed then Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin for ethics violations. Both Paetongtarn and former Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin are from the Pheu Thai Party. Shinawatra finished second in the 2023 elections.
