Apart from this, the scope of the general water streams of the state is 2,400 km, more than 6,000 fishermen catch fish. It is the responsibility of the Himachal Pradesh Fisheries Department to ensure that these fishermen get regular fish and people get a protein-rich diet.
The fishing business started again as soon as the ban was lifted on Friday. Every year, the Fisheries Department imposes a complete ban on fishing for two months so that fish of important species can breed naturally during this period. Fish seeds can be stored in the reservoirs. This closed season was implemented from 16 June to 15 August this year. During this period, 421 cases of illegal fishing were caught in the general waters of the state, from which the department received compensation of Rs 3.17 lakh.
The maximum number of fish caught were of silver and mirror carp species from Gobind Sagar reservoir. Fish of Singhada and Rohu species were caught from Pong reservoir, mirror carp from Kol Dam, and silver carp from Chamera and Ranjit Sagar. Last year, fish seeds of 70 mm and 100 mm size were collected. As compared to 1 April 2023 to 15 August 2023 last year, there has been an increase of about 32 metric tonnes of fish production in the reservoirs of the state from 1 April 2024 to 15 August 2024 this year. As compared to August 2023, almost double fish production has taken place in Gobind Sagar reservoir in August 2024. As per the recommendations made by ICAR-CIFRI, Kolkata, only fish seeds of size more than 100 mm were stocked in Gobind Sagar reservoir, which has shown increased fish production.
