Shimla, August 5: In an unprecedented initiative, Chamba is set to become the first district in Himachal Pradesh to set up a Green Hydrogen Mobility Station. This is a significant step towards sustainable energy solutions in the state. The Chief Minister today virtually laid the foundation stone of this pilot project, estimated to cost around Rs 14 crore.

This innovative project is being undertaken by the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) led by the current state government and is scheduled to be completed by August 2025. The station will be located near the Chamera-3 power station of NHPC and will have a 300 kW grid-connected solar power plant to meet its energy requirements.

The Chief Minister said, “The project will produce 20 kg of green hydrogen per day, which will be stored at a pressure of 450 bar or more for fuelling the Green Hydrogen bus.” Additionally, a hydrogen dispenser unit will also be installed to facilitate refuelling of these buses. The initiative aims to introduce green hydrogen buses in the region, with an aim to raise awareness about green hydrogen in one of the remote regions of India.

The chief minister highlighted that NHPC has already initiated the tender process to procure green hydrogen buses for Chamba, to ensure its availability once the pilot project is operational. The project is expected to generate revenue and create employment opportunities, which will contribute to the economic development of the region.

“The present state government aims to transform Himachal Pradesh into a ‘green energy state’ by March 31, 2026,” the chief minister said. “We are focusing on harnessing green energy to meet the demands and promoting green industry in line with this vision.”
