Nurpur, August 5: Taking a significant step against drug smuggling, Nurpur police has taken major action as part of its ongoing anti-drug drive. Acting on a secret information, police raided Chhanni under Police Station Damtal, resulting in recovery of 26.18 grams of Chitta (Heroin) from the house of a notorious criminal Ruby, resident of Chhanni village of Tehsil Indora, District Kangra.
During investigation, it was revealed that Ruby had a history of several arrests and heroin seizures earlier. Despite being caught several times, she continued to indulge in illegal drug trade and showed signs of habitual criminal behaviour. Realising the gravity of her acts, Ashok Ratna, Superintendent of Police, Nurpur, sent a proposal to the Home Secretary, Himachal government and the Detention Authority on May 8, 2024, recommending Ruby’s house arrest under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT NDPS) Act.
This case is a historic moment as Ruby has become the first female drug trafficker to be detained under the PIT NDPS Act in Himachal Pradesh. This is also the third case in the state where the detaining authority has issued house detention orders under this Act. In the previous two cases, both handled by Superintendent of Police Nurpur Ashok Ratna, the detaining authority had passed house detention orders.
The district police is determined to eliminate the illicit drug trade from the Nurpur area. Superintendent of Police Ashok Ratna emphasised the ongoing nature of their campaign, which aims to dismantle the network of drug traffickers and ensure community safety.
Ruby’s detention under the PIT NDPS Act is a significant step in curbing the spread of illicit drugs in Kangra district and beyond. The proactive measures of the police reflect a comprehensive effort to protect the community from the harmful effects of drug addiction and trafficking.
