Kinnaur, July 31: The Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has granted FCA Phase-2 clearance for use of about 85 bighas of land for the 450 MW Shongtong Karchham Hydroelectric Project in Kinnaur district. The clearance, which was pending since 2018, is a crucial step for the construction of the project.
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu declared, “The persistent efforts of the state government have played a vital role in achieving this milestone. This land was required for the construction of the barrage, which was essential for the completion of the project. The FCA clearance was pending with the central ministry for a long time, but the state government worked diligently to secure the required approval from the Centre.”
The Chief Minister highlighted that the Stage-I approval was granted by the Union Ministry on March 19, 2024. Subsequently, the state government submitted a compliance report addressing the conditions laid down for in-principle approval and later requested the Centre for final approval.
“The construction work of the 450 MW Shongtong Karchham Hydro Electric Project, allotted in 2012, is expected to be completed by November 2026. In preparation for starting power generation, a transmission line is also being laid. The tender process for this transmission line has been initiated to ensure its timely completion and avoid financial losses to the state,” the Chief Minister said.
This significant development is a step forward in the efforts to enhance the state’s power generation capacity and infrastructure. The project is expected to play a vital role in meeting the growing energy demands of the region, contributing to economic development and providing a reliable renewable energy source.
This approval has brought great relief to the state government and the residents of Kinnaur, who were eagerly waiting for the completion of this project. Now that the necessary approvals have been obtained, the state can focus on expediting the construction and ensuring timely execution of the project.
