Shimla, July 27: Taking a significant step to promote environmental conservation, the Himachal Pradesh government has declared eight new areas in the capital Shimla as green zones. The expansion aims to preserve the natural heritage of the city and curb unregulated urban development. The Town and Country Planning (TCP) department has issued an official notification, which will also be published in the government gazette. With this new announcement, the total number of green zones in Shimla has increased from 17 to 25.
The newly designated green areas include:
- The Retreat
- Mashobra
- Band Tukda Andari
- Shiv Mandir Andari
- Taal and Giri
- DPF Khalini
- BCS Mist Chamber
- Some areas of Parimahal
Strict building rules-
Along with the expansion of green areas, the TCP has announced strict building rules in these areas. The new rules provide that construction will be allowed only at a minimum distance of two metres from any tree within the green area. Additionally, there should be a minimum distance of five metres from forest land for any construction activity.
Government approval will be mandatory for all construction work in these areas. Especially in the Retreat Green Area, no permission will be given for private construction. If an old building needs to be reconstructed, it can be built according to the existing structure, but for this the final approval of the government will be necessary.
Public Participation and Feedback-
Before finalising these new green areas, the TCP department sought objections and suggestions from the public. A period of 30 days was provided for submitting feedback, during which a total of six objections and suggestions were received and duly considered. The TCP claims that the hearing process for these objections has been completed, ensuring that the voice of the public has been taken into account in the decision-making process.
These new rules are aimed at preserving the ecological balance of Shimla, which is known for its natural beauty and greenery. By enforcing strict construction rules, the government wants to prevent unregulated urban expansion and protect the natural heritage of the city.
