Shimla, July 24: In a major move to tackle property tax evasion, the Shimla Municipal Corporation has launched a comprehensive door-to-door survey in five wards: Chotta Shimla, Kasumpti, Vikasnagar, Kangnadhar and Panthaghati. The survey aims to label buildings with unique identification, facilitating better tracking and collection of property taxes.

According to Shimla Municipal Corporation officials, many building owners have failed to provide accurate information about their properties, leading to huge evasion of property tax. To tackle the issue, the civic body has outsourced the survey to a private company, which is carefully collecting data across Shimla city.

Earlier, the Shimla Municipal Corporation had used Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping through drones to survey these wards. The high-resolution drone cameras captured detailed photographs of the buildings, forming the basis for the current door-to-door exercise.

Shimla Municipal Corporation Commissioner Bhupinder Attri emphasised that the survey is being carried out in two phases: drone survey and the ongoing door-to-door survey. “Currently, we are conducting door-to-door survey, while the drone GIS mapping survey has already been completed. We are planning to extend the GIS mapping survey to the remaining wards once the weather conditions are favourable,” Attri said.

The Shimla Municipal Corporation aims to complete the survey by October. Once the survey is completed, the collected data will be manually uploaded to the e-property portal. This data will then be integrated with the UPYOG portal, a national platform designed to provide municipal services online.

Every building in Shimla will get a unique ID upon completion. This ID will streamline various services, including property tax payments, water supply bills, sewerage bills and trade license applications, and integrate them into a single application for the convenience of residents.
