Shimla, July 23: Giving relief to apple growers, the central government has announced a reduction in the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on boxes used for packing apples. From July 15, the GST rate on these boxes has been reduced from 18 percent to 12 percent, which will reduce the price by Rs 3 to 4 per box.
The decision was taken during the GST Council meeting on June 22 and the Department of Revenue under the Finance Ministry has issued the official notification. This 6 per cent cut is expected to reduce the price of brown cartons by Rs 2.50 to Rs 3.00, while the price of white cartons will come down by Rs 3.00 to Rs 3.50.
The recent order of the state government requiring universal cartons for packing apples has further increased the impact of this GST cut.
