Wrestlers’ harassment case: DCW demands case to be filed against police officers

New Delhi: The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) on Wednesday demanded registration of an FIR against the police officers who failed to register an FIR in the case of sexual harassment of women wrestlers.
DCW chairperson Swati Maliwal said, ‘It’s been 5 days but the Delhi Police has not registered an FIR on the complaint of the wrestlers regarding sexual harassment. This is illegal. Section 166A (c) IPC of the law says that if the policeman does not register an FIR of sexual harassment, an FIR can be lodged against him. We have sent a recommendation to register an FIR against the erring police officials.”
In a statement released on Wednesday, the Commission for Women issued some recommendations for the Delhi Police. The statement read, “The Commission is deeply troubled by the brazen and illegal act of the Delhi Police in failing to register an FIR in the present case despite serious allegations of sexual harassment against the accused person by the complainants (including a minor).” ” The Commission wishes to remind the Delhi Police that it is duty bound as per law to register an FIR immediately in this matter and ensure the safety of the survivors. In failing to do so, the Delhi Police will be seen to be willfully and willfully obstructing and compromising justice. Safety of survivors, which will require strict action against Delhi Police officials.”
The statement further said that an FIR should be immediately registered in the case of sexual harassment of women wrestlers by invoking relevant sections of POCSO and IPC.
“The accused person should be arrested immediately and the matter should be properly investigated. In case of threat calls received by the victims and their families, FIRs should be registered immediately,” the statement said.
The commission also said that the accused persons, including police officers and government officials, should be suspended.
“Accused persons including officials of Delhi Police and Sports Ministry should be suspended and proper investigation should be done. Appropriate protection should be provided to the survivors and their families immediately. The commission has also asked the police to investigate the matter immediately and send an action taken report.
