The area of 1,36,295 square meters – which will increase the passenger service capacity from 23 million passengers per annum (mppa) to 30 mppa – and will be a significant addition to the city’s infrastructure. Apart from boosting connectivity, it is also expected to benefit the local economy.
Among the unique features of the terminal is the skylight. This feature allows natural light to illuminate the space inside the building.

The new terminal is an attractive reflection of local Tamil culture, including kolams (a pattern or design drawn on the front of South Indian houses), saris, temples and other elements that evoke the natural surroundings.
Passengers at Chennai airport expressed happiness over the new development.

Vaibhav Varun, another passenger who arrived at the Chennai airport from Delhi on Saturday, said it is a good step towards improving the passenger experience.
“You have the new car parking which was also opened by the Hon’ble Civil Aviation Minister. I think it will definitely reduce the traffic load that one terminal would have. And the fact that you now have a separate international terminal Which is going to be operated, many international passengers will also get benefited. There are many flights from Dubai and Malaysia to other countries. So I think there is ease in travel load,” he said.
Some others said that such developments reflect the growing infrastructural capabilities of the country.
“As an avid traveller, I use both roadways and airways and the scenario is changing rapidly. I recently drove from Bangalore to Mysore and today we returned from Goa. The highway and everything around it provided a wonderful traveling experience. The new airport Goa is great. And what is coming here is also great. So the entire infrastructure development is being taken on a different path which will provide an international experience It does.
