Decisions Making In G20 Summit 2023 ?

The G20 Foreign Ministers met to discuss challenges like climate change, poverty, inequality, and economic slowdowns. They reaffirmed their commitment to multilateralism and the rules-based international order, and stressed the importance of global cooperation to solve contemporary global challenges.

Key decisions made during the G20 Foreign Ministers meeting under India’s Presidency include:

• Strengthening multilateralism and promoting global cooperation on sustainable development, climate action, food and energy security, counter-terrorism, counter-narcotics, global health, and gender equality.

• Focusing on deepening cooperation on sustainable development, humanitarian assistance and disaster risk reduction, and global talent pool.

Strengthening Multilateralism

• The G20 Foreign Ministers discussed the war in Ukraine and reiterated their national positions expressed in other fora, including the UN Security Council and the UN General Assembly. Most members condemned the war and stressed its adverse impact on the global economy, including increasing inflation, disrupting supply chains, and heightening energy and food insecurity.

• The G20 Foreign Ministers emphasized the need to uphold international law and the multilateral system that safeguards peace and stability, including adhering to international humanitarian law and protecting civilians and infrastructure in armed conflicts. They also called for peaceful resolution of conflicts and efforts to address crises through diplomacy and dialogue.

Climate Change and Biodiversity

• The G20 reaffirms its commitment to tackle climate change through the full and effective implementation of the Paris Agreement, reflecting equity and differentiated responsibilities.

• The G20 welcomes enhanced climate actions from updated NDCs and urges all parties to scale up mitigation and adaptation ambition and means of implementation.

• The G20 commits to achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions/carbon neutrality by or around mid-century, taking into account different national circumstances.

• The G20 recognizes the need to halt and reverse biodiversity loss by 2030 and commits to implementing the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

• The G20 promotes and supports nature-based solutions to enhance ecosystem resilience, sustainable agriculture and forestry, and sustainable production and consumption.

• The G20 recognizes the critical role of international cooperation and partnership, including with multilateral processes such as the UNFCCC, CBD, and IPBES, as well as through bilateral and regional initiatives.

Development Cooperation

• Development cooperation and partnerships are essential for accelerating progress in effectively achieving the SDGs of the 2030 Agenda. This cooperation should be guided by the principle of equal partnerships, country ownership, and tailored to national, regional and local needs and circumstances.

• Reliable, sustainable, resilient and quality infrastructure investment is important for development cooperation. Innovative financing mechanisms, including blended finance, should be utilized to address the financing gap towards the implementation of the 2030 agenda.

Humanitarian assistance and Disaster risk reduction

• Community-led approaches to disaster risk reduction and humanitarian assistance and the vital role of local actors and civil society organizations in responding to emergencies are recognized.

•  Effective coordination and cooperation among all actors involved in humanitarian assistance and disaster risk reduction are essential. Partnerships and collaboration should be strengthened to ensure a comprehensive and effective response to emergencies and to support sustainable development and resilience-building in disaster-prone areas.

Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment

• Covid-19 pandemic has disproportionately affected women and girls.

• Gender equality and women’s empowerment should be at the core of inclusive recovery efforts.

• Equal access to education, sports, professional opportunities, entrepreneurship, financial and digital inclusion, health, care, and education services must be ensured for women

•  Gender-based and other forms of violence against women and harassment must be prevented and responded to.

• Women’s leadership and participation in decision-making processes must be supported.

• Marginalized and vulnerable groups, including women and girls with disabilities, indigenous women and girls, and women and girls in humanitarian situations, must receive specific attention.
