On Sunday, Indian Meteorological Department released an alert for the 1st heat wave in the country. A heat wave is considered when,

  • The maximum temperature of plains is over 4o°C
  • The maximum temperature of coastal areas is over 37°C
  • The maximum temperature of the hilly region is over 30°C

IMD indicates that there are chances that the country would skip the spring season. The heat wave is expected in the parts of Kutch and the region of Konkan. The maximum temperature is expected to be 37-39°C. A large part of west and northwest India has recorded temperatures higher than normal by 5-10°C.

An anti-cyclonic pressure is recorded above the Gujarat and Rajasthan region. This is the reason for the sudden rise in the temperature. It is expected that a 3-5°C maximum rise will occur in the western parts of the country.

For northwest India, there is an expectation of anti-cyclonic formation over Punjab and Haryana after the 21st of February. This may cause relief from the high temperature.

Last year severe heat wave was recorded during the spring season in March and April. A loss of wheat yield was observed last year because of the heat wave. The heat wave of last year also caused many deaths.
