A civilian was killed and six soldiers were injured in a terrorist attack in J&K (representational)
New Delhi: Two soldiers were killed in a terror attack in J&K’s Baramulla today, sources said. Two porters were also killed in the attack, while three others were injured, sources said.
Indian Army’s Chinar Corps confirmed in a post on X that an exchange of fire took place between troops and terrorists in the general area of Butapathri in Baramulla.
Terrorists attacked an Army vehicle in Butapathri this evening. The attack came hours after a labourer was shot and injured in J&K. The injured man was later identified as Pritam Singh, a resident of Uttar Pradesh.
The attack on the Army vehicle today was the second attack in the Union Territory in the last 72 hours.
Three days ago, six construction workers and a doctor were killed – at least two of them terrorists – after militants attacked an accommodation camp for construction workers building a tunnel. The dead were identified as Dr Shahnawaz from Budgam in Kashmir and Gurmeet Singh from Gurdaspur in Punjab, while Mohammad Hanif, Faheem Nasir and Kaleem were from Bihar.
The sixth and seventh were Anil Shukla from Madhya Pradesh and Shashi Abrol from Jammu. The attackers abandoned an INSAS rifle.
Newly-elected Chief Minister Omar Abdullah called it “a dastardly and cowardly attack on non-local workers”. “They were working on a major infrastructure project. I strongly condemn this attack on unarmed innocent people and offer my condolences to their loved ones,” Mr Abdullah said.
The attack on the accommodation camp was the worst attack on civilians in recent months, and came just days after Mr Abdullah, whose party won the October 8 election, the first in a decade, was sworn in.
A day after that attack, a newly formed militant group – Tehreek Labaik Ya Muslim – was destroyed following raids in several districts of the Union Territory.
