Former Union Minister and Member of Parliament from Hamirpur Lok Sabha constituency, Shri Anurag Singh Thakur, on the completion of 10 years of Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY), has described this scheme as a transformational step towards financial inclusion.

Shri Anurag Singh Thakur said, “A decade ago, the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji started the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) with the idea that every person in India should have a bank account so that every citizen can connect with the banking system. Tax can make their life easier. Today, on the completion of 10 years of this scheme, its popularity in itself is a proof of the success of this scheme. Although at that time some people dismissed it as a mere ‘gimmick’, today it has become a major factor in the financial condition of India. It is one of the most successful initiatives in history, which has fundamentally changed the financial inclusion landscape. Over 53 crore bank accounts have been opened in the last ten years, i.e. on an average 44 lakh new accounts are being opened every month. This historic achievement has brought millions of people into the formal banking system for the first time”

Speaking further, Shri Anurag Singh Thakur said, “The total deposits in Jan Dhan accounts have now crossed ₹ 2 lakh crore, reflecting the unwavering faith of people in the Prime Minister and his schemes. These small savings have transformed the lives of countless people. The impact of this scheme is particularly remarkable in rural/semi-urban India, where 67% of the accounts are in these areas. It has empowered the underprivileged, ensuring that access to banking services is no longer a distant dream. It is not a dream but a reality for all, regardless of their social or economic background”

Shri Anurag Singh Thakur added, “Women have been at the forefront of this shift towards financial inclusion. 56% of Jan Dhan account holders are women. This has not only promoted financial independence but has also contributed to gender equality and empowering women. The foundation laid by this scheme is strong and its results speak for themselves.”
