There has been a lot of uproar over the news of the appointment of a new ambassador to India by the Taliban government of Afghanistan. In fact, it was claimed in several media reports that Afghanistan has appointed the current Counselor Qadir Shah in charge of the affair (Acting Ambassador) in India. Since then the ruckus has started. Ambassador Farid Mamumdzay, appointed during the Ashraf Ghani government in India, has issued a denial.
In fact, Afghanistan’s Tolo News tweeted an unsigned letter attributed to Afghanistan refugees living in India. It claimed that 3 diplomats have been named in corruption in a rent agreement with an Indian company. It also includes the name of Ambassador Farid Mamundzai appointed during the Ashraf Ghani government. Significantly, the Afghanistan embassy in India is still run by Ambassador Fareed Mamundzai, who was appointed by the Ashraf Ghani government. The government left after the Taliban attack, although the status of the embassy since then is unclear.
Farid Mamundzai of this news issued a statement on Monday terming it as false. He said that the news about the appointment of new Ambassador of Afghanistan to India is baseless and misleading. He said in his statement that Afghanistan rejects this claim and the news of the appointment of an acting ambassador in Delhi by the Taliban government is not true at all.
He said that the mission is working in the interests of the people of Afghanistan. The mission is working with the Indian authorities to deliver humanitarian assistance. This includes supply of Covid vaccine, medicines and food supply. Farid Mamundzai said that the Embassy also wants to inform the citizens of Afghanistan that it is working in India for the benefit of the people of Afghanistan in India.
