Russian President Vladimir Putin will not participate in the G20 summit to be held in India next month. Kremlin’s spokesperson Dmitry Peskov has confirmed this. Putin last attended the G20 Summit in Japan in 2019 in person.
Putin also participated virtually in the summits held in Riyadh in 2020 and Rome in 2021. The Russian President was also not present at the 2022 summit in Bali. Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will come to New Delhi in place of Putin. The summit will be held on 9 and 10 September.
The BRICS summit was held in South Africa from 22 to 24 August. Vladimir Putin did not participate in this either. Foreign Minister Lavrov had attended in his place. There was suspense till the last moment on Putin’s participation in this summit. Later, the host country South Africa itself made it clear that the Russian President would not come to Johannesburg.
In fact, host South Africa was in a dilemma regarding Putin’s participation in the BRICS summit. The reason for this is that the International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued a warrant against the Russian President regarding the attack on Ukraine and war crimes. Putin was in danger of arrest if he came to Johannesburg. Therefore, there was an agreement between the South African and the Russian government and after that information was given about Putin’s absence.
