Shimla, August 25: Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri chaired the review meeting of Himachal Transport Development and Road Safety Council here. In the meeting, along with reviewing the various activities being carried out in view of road safety, the action plan related to road safety and the year 2024-25 was discussed in detail.
It was told in the meeting that in the year 2024-25, an amount of Rs 23.92 crore is being spent on various works by Transport, Police, Health, Education, Public Works Department under Road Safety. As a result of various activities being run by the department through various stakeholder departments under the Road Safety Cell, there has been a reduction of 13 percent in road accidents and 14.6 percent in mortality rate last year.
Deputy Chief Minister and Chairman of the Council Mukesh Agnihotri directed that all the stakeholder departments should promptly complete the various works and activities going on under road safety and ensure its regular monitoring and review. The Deputy Chief Minister said that CCTV cameras should be installed in a phased manner for the purpose of monitoring illegal activities related to road safety in the border areas of the state, especially from Paonta Sahib to Una, so that illegal activities in the adjoining areas of the state can be stopped from the point of view of road safety.
It was also decided that information boards of the Transport Department Road Safety Cell should be installed on all the activities and schemes to be done under road safety. In the meeting, the orders issued by the Supreme Court to prepare the Act and Rules of the Road Safety Committee were also informed. The Deputy Chief Minister directed that Road Safety Acts should be prepared and proposals should be brought as per the need. He directed that the officers of various stakeholder departments posted in the Road Safety Cell should also ensure regular inspection and monitoring of the activities being done by the departments under road safety. He said that a proposal should be sent to strengthen the road safety cell to overcome the shortage of staff.
He directed that a ‘No Horn’ campaign should be launched to control noise pollution in Shimla city and ‘No Horn’ awareness booklets should be distributed in the entire state. Various members of the council, heads of stakeholder departments and other representatives participated in the meeting.
