TEHRAN: Iran has banned pagers and walkie-talkies on all flights, local media reported on Saturday, weeks after deadly sabotage attacks in Lebanon that were blamed on Israel.
“The entry of any electronic communication device, except mobile phones, into flight cabins or in unaccompanied cargo is banned,” the ISNA news agency quoted Iran’s Civil Aviation Organization spokesman Jafar Yazerlo as saying.
The decision came three weeks after sabotage attacks targeting members of the Iran-allied Hezbollah group in Lebanon killed at least 39 people when pagers and walkie-talkies exploded.
Nearly 3,000 others were injured in the attack, which Iran and Hezbollah blamed on Israel, including Tehran’s ambassador to Lebanon, Mojtaba Amani.
Earlier this month, Dubai-based airline Emirates banned pagers and walkie-talkies on its planes.
Regional tensions have escalated since the start of the Gaza war in October last year, which has involved Iran-allied groups from Lebanon, Iraq, Syria and Yemen.
Several airlines have suspended flights to Iran in recent weeks after Tehran launched a missile attack on Israel on October 1.
Iran fired nearly 200 missiles at Israel to retaliate against the killing of Tehran-allied leaders in the region and a general from Iran’s Revolutionary Guards.
Israel has since vowed to retaliate, with Defence Minister Yoav Galant saying the response would be “deadly, precise and surprising”.
