Shimla, 02 September: The weather is once again expected to turn bad in Himachal Pradesh, with various parts of the state facing a yellow alert for heavy rains over the next two days. According to the weather department, light rain is expected to continue at many places till September 8, but the weather is forecast to remain rough on September 2 and 3.

On Monday morning, Shimla and its adjoining areas recorded light rains. This rain, though not unusual for this season, is significantly affecting the ongoing apple harvesting season. Apple growers are facing challenges in both harvesting and transporting their produce due to the wet conditions.

The monsoon has already left a trail of devastation in Himachal Pradesh. According to the State Disaster Management Authority, 64 people have lost their lives due to landslides, floods and cloudbursts this season, while more than 30 people are still missing. The total number of deaths related to weather and other accidents is 271, while 423 people have been injured in various incidents.

The initial damage assessment done by the State Disaster Management Authority has revealed a grim picture. Cloudburst has claimed 23 lives, while floods have caused 26 drowning deaths. Landslides have killed six people, floods have killed eight people and lightning has killed one person. Besides, 25 people have died due to snake bites, 15 due to electrocution and 38 due to falling. Road accidents have been particularly deadly during the rainy season, resulting in 120 deaths, while nine other deaths have occurred due to other reasons.

The financial impact of the monsoon has also been staggering. The state government estimates losses of about Rs 1,265 crore. Himachal Pradesh has witnessed 51 incidents of cloudburst and floods, along with 40 major landslides, causing widespread devastation. In response to these losses, the state government has appealed to the central government for a special relief package.
