Shimla, 06 August: In a bid to modernise its education system and enhance its efficiency, Himachal Pradesh is going to implement an AI-powered attendance system for teachers. The initiative is part of a comprehensive set of educational reforms that will be reviewed in the upcoming cabinet meeting on August 8.

Education Minister Rohit Thakur recently held a comprehensive meeting with department officials at the state secretariat, focusing on key changes in the education sector from schools to colleges and universities. The key points discussed included the introduction of an AI-based system for monitoring teacher attendance, which will link teachers’ mobile locations to their attendance records. The initiative, which is currently in a pilot phase under a new agency, aims to ensure accuracy and accountability in teachers’ attendance.

Apart from the AI attendance system, several other key reforms were discussed in the meeting. The government plans to discontinue courses in government degree colleges that are no longer in demand and introduce new courses in areas where there is a special need. This strategic move aims to more closely align educational offerings with student and regional demands, to ensure that resources are used effectively and students receive relevant education.

In addition, a new guideline is being developed to standardise the process of merging government schools. This guideline will serve as a standard operating procedure for future decisions regarding school closures and mergers, ensuring consistency and clarity. Recently, the Cabinet decided to close or merge around 450 schools with low enrolment. The new guideline will provide detailed considerations and steps for these closures.

The restructuring plan also includes rationalisation of schools to optimise resources and improve the quality of education. Additionally, the Education Minister has directed the restructuring of the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) and District Institutes of Education and Training (DIET).

Many of these matters will be taken up in the Cabinet meeting on August 8, a significant step in the state’s efforts to reform and modernise the education sector.
