Shimla, August 5: The Himachal Pradesh government is gearing up for significant changes in its education system with a focus on improving the quality of education. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has reiterated the plan to merge government schools located within a radius of two kilometres. The move is aimed at addressing the challenges of shortage of teachers and raising the overall educational standards in the state.
Chief Minister Sukhu, while interacting with the media on the occasion of Dr. Yashwant Singh Parmar’s birth anniversary on Sunday, expressed concern that Himachal Pradesh is currently ranked 18th in the country in terms of quality education, which indicates the need for substantial improvement.
The Chief Minister said, “Opening universities is easy, but we should focus on performance and quality.” He stressed the need for ranking and evaluating private universities based on their performance. The proposed plan to merge schools within a radius of two kilometres is part of the government’s comprehensive strategy to provide adequate resources, including teachers, to emphasize on quality education.
Chief Minister Sukhu pointed out that schools with fewer students and shortage of teachers are major problems in providing quality education. By integrating schools, the government aims to optimise resources and provide a better educational environment for students.
The chief minister also mentioned that similar transformational changes will be made in other departments as well. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to make Himachal Pradesh self-reliant by 2027 and ensure that the state’s resources are used effectively. “The level of education has fallen considerably, and we have to make decisive changes,” he said.
