In spite of all the efforts of the host India in the meeting of development ministers of G20 countries in Varanasi, consensus could not be reached on the draft of Ukraine war in the statement to be issued due to opposition from Russia and China.

Differences have once again emerged in the G-20 regarding the issue of Russia’s attack on Ukraine. A meeting of the group’s development ministers here on Monday failed to reach a consensus on the Ukraine war draft in a statement to be issued in the face of opposition from Russia and China, despite host India’s best efforts.

A 14-paragraph outcome document and a brief statement by the chair issued after the meeting noted that agreement was reached on two paragraphs. Also with footnotes it is clarified that Russia and China were the two countries that objected to the reference to the Ukraine war.

Foreign Minister S. Various developmental challenges facing the world were discussed in the meeting of development ministers of G-20 countries chaired by Jaishankar. Simultaneously, a seven-year plan launched by India to accelerate progress on the Sustainable Development Goals through an inclusive roadmap was adopted. The meeting also adopted another document which aims to promote cooperation and partnership for sustainable lifestyles as a complement to climate mitigation.

Paragraphs 10 and 11 refer to the Ukraine war

Paragraphs 10 and 11 of the conclusion document and the President’s brief statement noted that most members strongly condemned the Ukraine war. Members stressed that it was causing immense human suffering, noting that ‘today’s era should not be one of war’, similar to what Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said while expressing his opinion on the conflict.

Condemnation of Russian aggression

It further added that the Ukraine war was discussed in the meeting and referred to the related resolutions of the UN Security Council and the United General Assembly. Condemned Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and called for Russia’s unconditional and complete withdrawal from Ukrainian territory.

Threat of nuclear weapons unacceptable

Paragraph 11 also states that the use or threat of use of nuclear weapons is unacceptable. At the same time, diplomatic efforts and dialogue have been described as important for peaceful resolution of conflicts and to overcome crises. Significantly, the G-20 Foreign Ministers’ meeting in New Delhi also failed to issue a joint statement due to the tussle between the US-led Western countries and Russia on the issue of the Ukraine war.

Everyone talked about their interest: Jaishankar

At the media briefing, Jaishankar said, each delegation spoke for its own interest and presented its point of view. I will not get into who supported whom and who did not support whom. The most appropriate thing is that everyone spoke for himself. He further said, my job as Speaker was to find the common elements and put them together and that is the document that is in front of you.
